Bowles researches French cultural history as well as film studies, society, and politics. His primary research field is twentieth-century social, political, and cultural history through film (fiction and documentary), with a focus on the 1930s and 40s. In February 2012 his book “Marcel Pagnol” was published, the first comprehensive overview of the French director's career in theater and cinema, part of Manchester University's “French Film Directors” series.
