Um! As we Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: get started um, or as we wait for a few more people to come in. Please go ahead and find the chat and introduce yourself. Tell us your name, the your year, and your Major Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Great, and it's really nice to see. We've got a really broad range of years everything from first year to seniors. Um! A wide variety of majors. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um! That's really exciting. And again, for those of you who are just joining us. Go ahead and find the chat bar and introduce yourself. Let us know your name, your uh, and your Major. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: All right. Well, it is just a few minutes past seven, and you know I want to get started. I want to respect everyone's time Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: um, and you know as people come in they can join us. So thank you all again for introducing yourselves. Um! I will introduce myself. My name is Dr. Elli Shaba Cohen. Um, I Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: um. I work in the Hamilton Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies. I Um. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: I am the Director of International Education programs and outreach in the Dean's office, and I teach a variety of courses in the International Studies Department. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um. My own personal background is in international development, with the focus on education, and my research focuses on um refugee studies and refugee issues. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um. So this course, this in I in T. L. Three hundred and three I have taught before, and i'm really excited to be adding a a ten day travel component to the class. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: So what i'm gonna do in today's info session is, i'm gonna just go over Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: um. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: I'll go over the the ten Day study abroad program. Tell you what we're gonna do. What the requirements are. We'll talk a little bit about cost um some of the logistics, and then I hope that we'll have a lot of time at the end for Q. A. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: so um! And if you're just joining us, and you haven't already introduced yourself in the chat, go ahead and let us know your name. Your year, and your major, and that's nice to see the real variety um of people who are interested in this program. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: So let's Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: so to to get started. Um, like. I said, this is a ten day study abroad. What's called a short term faculty led study abroad program uh in Jordan, in the Middle East. Um that focuses on refugees and forced migration, and it is part of A Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: or it's an at an optional. Add on to um Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: to this international in Tl. I three hundred and three Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: um, which is a full semester course, and students who take in Tl. X. Three hundred and ninety-eight, which is the study abroad. Component are all expected to also take in t L. Three o three. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um. So you take the whole refugee studies program course, and then we have at the end this ten day trip to Jordan. That, uh gives us the opportunity to really um Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: dive deeper into refugee issues in a particular context, but not everyone who takes uh in Tl: three or three will take the study of broad component, and that's totally fine. You can take I and T L. Three hundred and three without taking three hundred and ninety-eight. But you can't do it the other way around. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: So um! Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: The Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: goals of the trip um are to provide on the ground context to further student understanding of refugee issues, right so to really get hands on experience, understanding and witnessing the things that we talk about in class, right? So bringing to light the theoretical underpinnings of forced migration Right? So seeing how how those theories really play out in practice Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: um Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: the course, the trip itself aims to examine the multitude of complex experiences that forced migrants face and manage in the particular context of Jordan, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: and then to witness understand and really critically investigate the wide range of humanitarian responses to forced migration. Again, in this particular context. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: And so what this does is helps us to take what we'll learn about over the whole semester at a kind of a broad theoretical level, and really look at it in one particular context, and talk to people who are actually doing this work meet refugees who are actually benefiting from this work. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um! Find out whether they are benefiting from it or not. Um to really get into the complexities of what it means to be a refugee um, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: and to, you know, throughout the trip we'll meet and hear from different refugee populations here. How those experiences differ! Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: and um Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Oh, and and we'll get to this more later. But we will also um actually volunteer with refugees. Right? So so have a few opportunities to give back in a in a small and small way. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: So like I said in the beginning, Uh, there are really two main requirements. Logistically, there are also assignments that are required, but to participate in the one credit. Um. Add on in the one credit study a broad piece you are required to take in T. L. I. Three hundred and three refugees in force to migration, and you're required to participate in three pre departure. Orientation sessions. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um. Now it's really important to note that there are three um, even though the registrar there seems to be a mistake, and only two are listed, but there are three Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: pre departure orientation sessions, and those sessions. We'll talk about them in a little bit, but there to really prepare us for the ten days in Jordan. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: So this course is offered in partnership with an organization called Reclaim Childhood and Reclaim. Childhood is a really amazing Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: small Ngo, based in Jordan that creates safe and inclusive spaces for refugees and local girls in Jordan to thrive by playing sports, working with coaches and building community. So What does that mean? Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Uh reclaim? Childhood is what we call a uh sport for development organization. They use sport as a tool for international development, and in this particular context they bring together Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: a wide variety of refugee populations. So in Jordan we're talking about Syrian refugees, iraqi, refugees, yemeni refugees, somali refugees, sudanese refugees, Palestinian refugees. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Uh, those are the main populations, but they bring all those populations, together with local Jordanian girls Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: to play sports. Um! Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: It is a reclaimed childhood is, is a all girls organization, and the all the coaches are women. The coaches are all local women. Um, who come from the different refugee and Jordanian populations. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: They um work in three different Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: cities in Jordan. We will be with them primarily in Amman, which is the capital, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: and they're going to be kind of our main host. So we will actually volunteer at reclaimed childhood practice a couple of times during our ten days in Jordan. We'll spend Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: a a pretty good amount of time with their coaches. One of the program managers of reclaim childhood will actually be our secondary staff person, and she'll be with us the entire ten days. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um and um! We'll have a session with the coaches, a session with the director um some sessions with the girls like, I said, and some time volunteering. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: So they're really kind of our main hosts. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Okay? So through the trip we will visit a variety of organizations Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: we will get to like, I said, spend a really significant amount of time, I think, with reclaim childhood. But we will also visit Unhcr, which is the main un agency with the mandate to protect and serve refugees. So we will go visit Unhcr headquarters in in Jordan. We will hear from different offices. So you know, different departments within unhcr we'll get to see their compound. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um, it's a pretty cool experience. We will spend a full day with so we on which is a community-led organization Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: uh led by and for refugee populations. Uh. So we end is a really really interesting organization. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: They serve um minority refugee populations in Jordan, primarily Sudanese and Somali Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: with some involvement with the Yemeni community, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: and they are primarily run by Sudanese and Somali refugees in Jordan. Um who have a very different experience than than the Syrian refugees and the Iraqi refugees. Um in Jordan Um, partially because it is. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Their experiences are very racialized Right? And they experience a lot of racism. They are a minority refugee population in the country. Um. And so from the kind of international community perspective, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: much of the donor funds that are given to Jordan to support. Refugees are earmarked specifically for Syrian refugees, who are the largest refugee population. So, as a result, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: the on top of the racism, they experience. They also just Don't get the same kinds of services and the same funding for services. And so part of part of the response to that has been that Somali and Sudanese populations in particular um Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: really get lost in the shuffle. And And so a a group of them have formed this organization, and they do really amazing work, and they're gonna host us for an entire day. There's going to be a panel where we will hear from their different experiences. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um. We're going to have lunch with them that will be cooked by um A. I believe she's a so Molly. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Nope, I think she's a Sudanese chef, so we will also be throughout our time contributing to the local economy. Right? So we will be um ordering Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: a lunch for for all of us, and the So we and community catered by this uh Sudanese chef. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: And then there's gonna be in the afternoon. They're gonna tell us about the ways that so we in serves as a space of resistance the kinds of anti racism work they do, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: and the ways that they work with both local and international communities. So that's going to be a really awesome day. Um, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: I want to step back for one second, because I realized that I sort of dove into all the things we're going to do, and I didn't tell you where we will be. Um, so we will be based in Aman, which is the capital of Jordan. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: In Jordan there are three refugee camps. The largest refugee camp is called Zattery. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um. We will not be visiting Zachary. It's actually Um Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: we will not be visiting Zachary. It's incredibly difficult to get permissions to go to refugee camps. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um! It is also less safe to visit a refugee camp, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: but also and I think more important, for the Jordanian context is that eighty over eighty of refugees in Jordan live in urban areas are considered what's called urban refugees, and the the majority of them live in a man the capital. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: So we will be visiting um community community organizations and refugee populations who are not in camps, but are in urban areas. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: So we will be traveling around the city, and a man is a really large, sprawling city, like. Think of kind of like Los Angeles like really massive urban sprawl. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um! So like I said, we'll see reclaimed childhood. We'll see you in Hcr. We'll see. So we end. We'll see the Collateral Repair Project, which is an organization that works Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: that was founded to work with Iraqi refugees in around two thousand and eight um Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: they are. They have expanded. They work now with a large variety, a large yeah, a large variety of refugee populations, but they are still kind of Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: um a hub for Iraqi refugees in Jordan. So we will visit. They have two community centers. We will visit uh both community centers. We will also um hire their Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: local chefs uh what's called their hope kitchen, so their hope kitchen will cater a lunch for us. We will meet the folks, Some of the folks who work at Crp, and that's both Jordanian staff and American staff. Right? So we'll learn Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: some of the ways that that Americans can work in international development or Um, not just Americans, but outsiders right? Um expats Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: can work in international development and refugee services. And so we'll learn a little bit about what those careers are like. What those career paths are like, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: we will hopefully get a chance to to do an activity at the community center. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um, Jordan is Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: um. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: There are some Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: we want to be respectful of and aware of, gender norms in Jordan, and so many of the activities that take place in these community centers are segregated by uh sex. So Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: here, ideally, what we'll do is we will have the women, women's students with um, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: the Jordanian or the Sorry, the refugee women, the male students with male refugee populations doing different activities. Um, likely the men will go to the barber shop, and so one of the things that Crp does is um Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: i'm liking on the word Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: employment training, right vocational training. They provide skills so that um refugees can can work and make some money. So they have a barber shop where they train refugees on how to be barbers, and they also have a beauty salon where they train the women on how to do hair and makeup. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um. So we may do that. A group may go to the men's, yoga class or the women's yoga class. It'll sort of depend on whatever is happening the day that we visit, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: and then we'll visit an organization called Iraq, the International Refugee Assistance Project, and they are actually an international organization with offices around the world that help refugees go through the legal process of Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: of resettlement, right of of Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: all the paperwork and legal process involved in moving from being a refugee in a country of asylum to a a resettled refugee that might be in the Us. Or Europe or Australia, or something like that. And so at Iraq we will hear from Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: largely the employees, who are both Jordanian and expats, and we'll hear from them again about the work that they do, and their career paths and opportunities for students to kind of follow in those paths. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: So those are the main organizations that we will be visiting with over the ten day trip, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: so we'll meet a lot of different people we will like, I said. We'll meet refugee and Jordanian coaches who work with Cr. Um who work with um reclaimed childhood. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: We'll meet international lawyers. We'll meet entrepreneurial women right like the Hope Kitchen. We'll meet Sudan these community organizers and we will meet a wide variety of people um, and get to hear their experiences, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: their stories as much as they are willing to share with us. Um! So you can see here, up in the upper left hand corner that is reclaimed childhood down in the lower left hand corner. That is, uh. So we in in the middle here that's irr. And over on the right the Hope kitchen that's Crp Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: the collateral repair project. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: We're not only gonna do refugee related things right. If we're flying all the way over to Jordan, we are gonna see some sites. Um, so we will visit some of the ancient architect architecture and um Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: ancient sites like the amount Citadel. That's this one, the Roman Amphitheatre. Right? These are thousands of years old. Um. We'll visit Rainbow Street, which is Um, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: one of the main Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: shopping centers in Jordan and I'm. On. We'll visit Jbal. Web Day, which is another one of the really kind of trendy hipster neighborhoods. We'll spend time exploring these different neighborhoods, visiting these different sites. We'll walk through downtown. I'm on Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: um. We'll have. You will have opportunities to go out on your own um to go. Have different meals at different restaurants. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um! Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: And to sort of take in the sites Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: again. If we're going all the way over to Jordan. We're not gonna just stay in a month, although that is sort of the central hub of our course related time. We will take an overnight excursion down south, and we'll go to Petra and ancient navity and city. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: We will uh spend the night camping luxurious camping um in Wadi Rum. We will be hosted by Bedouins in Wadi rum. We will do some hiking, and then we will go to the Dead Sea. We will get to float in the dead sea. Check out some Dead Sea mud Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: um, and have a Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: have a good time for for forty-eight hours. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: We will stay in a hotel, called Shem Cell Web Day, which is in the neighborhood that I mentioned Java Webde, which is a a really Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: pool kind of hipster neighborhood. Lots of coffee shops and bars and restaurants. Um, It's a real kind of center of town for young people. Um as well as for a lot of expats. Um shem cell Web debt is a apartment style hotel. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: So you can see. Here is a picture of the living room, and each unit has a living room, a bathroom, a little kitchen area and two bedrooms Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: each bedroom. Every student will have their own bed. No one will share a bed. Um! That is I you policy. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um. No one will share a bed. You may share a room, but we will keep all the rooms um separated by sex, so we will try to keep men together in one hotel unit and women together. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um, for our night at Wadi Ram, we will say at this Hilali camp, which is like, I said kind of luxurious camping. Um, So these are Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: um Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: climate controlled rooms. There are beds. You'll have blankets. Um! It's not. It's not a luxurious hotel room. But you're not like sleeping on a a tent and a sleeping bag. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um! And they will, of course, feed us, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: so we're gonna eat the food. And Jordan is amazing, so we will have breakfast every morning prepared at the hotel. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: We will eat lunches together, and then evenings will, by and large have free. So you'll have your um Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: where you want to go, for dinner will be up to you. I will several nights kind of make a recommendation that we all go somewhere together. So there is, for example, a Yemeni restaurant that I will strongly encourage everyone to go to together because it is delicious. Um, or you know, one night we might. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: There are several different restaurants that I have selected, that we can all go to together. Um, but that is not included in the cost, whereas lunch, with the exception of two days, lunch is included in the cost. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um! And here you have just some photos of some of the food. So up in the right hand corner Here, that's the Yemeni restaurant, and it is served kind of in a big table with this big bread. Um, and we kind of all eat It shared this. On the bottom left hand corner Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: is one of the trendy restaurants in uh. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: These are just other examples of food, because the food is really good and it is fairly inexpensive, Right? So I would recommend budgeting ten dollars for dinner uh, but depending on where we go, and how many people you go with, and how much you like sharing food you could. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: You may not spend ten dollars on on a dinner, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: so that leads us to the fee. Um! So I am really happy to say that that cost has already come down. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um! So it will cost around sixteen hundred and fifty dollars Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: to participate in the course, and so that includes your hotel. Includes all your breakfasts, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: lunch, all lunches, except for two Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: um honorary for all the speakers and all the organizations. So we are providing um a donation to each organization, who we visit, to thank them for their labor, and hosting us. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Uh, it includes transportation around town, and an air conditioned vehicle. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Uh, it includes the two day extra excursion down to Petrol Wadi ram in the Dead Sea, and it covers all the costs for staffing. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um! What it does not include is your trip is your flight, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: your dinners, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: two lunches, the visa which you buy at the airport. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um a background check that you'll have to do and pass uh to volunteer with the refugee communities. A sim card for your phone if if you want to buy one, which I recommend Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: um, and then other souvenirs and gifts, it also does not include um a two hundred and twenty-five dollar non refundable deposit that you have to that you pay when you register for the course Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: now like I said, it's one thousand six hundred and fifty. That's if we have eight students. If we have twelve students, which is the max that cost goes down even more from one thousand six hundred and fifty to probably Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: fourteen hundred dollars. Um! So I have done everything I can to keep that cost down. Um! Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: And there are scholarships available. So when you apply for the program, you can also on the same um, the same deadline apply for uh scholarships through Hls. There are also scholarships across. I you to fund these sorts of international travel experiences. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: So the staffing, like I said, I am the program director. Um, I will be leading the trip. I was out. I lived in Jordan from two thousand and sixteen to two thousand and seventeen Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: um. I was out there in Jordan in um June of this year to set everything up. So i'd met with all the organizations. Explain to them who we are, what we're doing, what we expect, what they expect from us, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: so i'll be leading the trip and leading the course. We will also have Rina memory with us, and Reina is the um program. Associate at reclaimed childhood. She has a masters in international relations from a university in Hungary. She's fluent in both English and Arabic, and she'll really be leading the logistics any kind of emergencies. If anyone needs to go to the hospital. If um, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: I don't know whatever emergency is, come up, she will deal with that right as a local person who really knows how to navigate the systems has the fluency in language and culture. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: And then it is a course. So there are certain course expectations Uh, like, I said, you're expected to attend three pre departure orientation sessions. Um at that, Pdo. You'll be expected to give some group presentations. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: We'll be writing what are called tips Letters uh tips stands for Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Can't remember what the tip stands for, but it's a Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: a you over the subm. It it's a it's a reflective tool, right? So you'll be writing. They're kind of like Journal entries but a little bit different. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um for each site that we visit, someone will be responsible for giving a short presentation to prepare us for that site or community visit. There'll be a brainstorming session towards the end. To think about your final papers, and then you'll be expected to write a short final paper. I think five to seven pages, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: and all of this is really to to help Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: to give you an opportunity to learn about the things that we are going to be seeing, and to really facilitate and foster reflection. Um, right, so that we make sure that we move from just seeing things and doing things to making those connections between course materials. Um, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: you know, and thinking just thinking about the experiences more deeply. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: So uh the pre departure orientation. We will talk about Jordan and i'm on. We'll talk about kind of what to expect we'll go over some how to get around. We'll go over kind of the course basics. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: We'll learn a little bit more about the refugee situation, particularly in Jordan. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: In the second orientation. We'll talk about logistics of traveling abroad right? So we can. We'll talk more about safety concerns and how to stay safe. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Uh we'll talk about how to maintain your health while you're abroad. We'll come up with our plans, for if we get sick, or if we get homesick, or any kind of mental health challenges that might arise. We'll talk about communicating with family and friends while abroad, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: and then the third pdo will talk about how to navigate culture and identity. Right? So we'll think about our own cultural identities and how to navigate Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: those while we're abroad. We'll think about um Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: how those might be challenged. When we're abroad. We'll talk about cultural identities and behavioral norms and expectations in Jordan right? And think about how to navigate those which, of course, is tied to safety. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um! We'll talk about stereotypes that we might hold, and how they might impact our trip. We'll also think about some of the stereotypes that folks that we're visiting may be holding about us, and how that will impact our interactions in Jordan. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um, each uh Pd. Is, I think two hours Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: um Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: safety and security, I would say, by and large Jordan is a very safe place to be um there. The largest risks that we will face are likely sexual harassment for women and female presenting individuals Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: and um Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: petty crime right like pick packeting and stuff. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: There is Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: a threat of terrorism if you look up, you know. Um. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: If you look up the the travel restrictions of the American Government, Jordan is listed as a level Two Um. There are certain areas that are advised not to go to, and we will not go to any of those places right? We will not travel to any cities listed as high risk by the State Department. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um! Some of the things that I will do to make sure to that we stay safe is, I will register our travel with the Us. Embassy. So if anything happens, they know we're there. They will know how to contact us. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: I will connect with the Fulbright office, who is closely connected to the Embassy to receive updates on security briefings. So they get weekly security briefings, and they will pass that information on to me, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: I will make sure to monitor the State Department website for any security updates and and adapt our itinerary accordingly. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Like, I said, we will not travel to any of the cities listed as high risk by the State Department, and we have a local Jordan and staff member with us, and she will be key in navigating any security concerns. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um. You will be briefed on safety and security issues. You will learn about proper dress, behavioral expectations and gender norms and other cultural considerations. And that's really the biggest key for, or Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: really key for um, really avoiding as best we can sexual harassment or any harassment and petty crime. Um, which, like I said, are the biggest risks Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: you will learn about the local laws, especially around drinking and drugs. Um, you will use a buddy system when you go out. No one's going out alone. Um, we're only there for ten days. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: I you know Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: we are taking all the precautions, but I also want to emphasize. Jordan is a very safe place. Um! People are welcoming. They're warm. They love having foreigners come visit. They're excited that we're coming. All the organizations that I visited and told about our trip, all the waiters who I told about our trip. They're excited that Americans are coming. They want you to have a good time. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: It is also Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: a slightly authoritarian government, and they monitor things very closely, and it is in their geopolitical interest to maintain a really close relationship with Americans. The Government is well aware of that. Um! So there are um Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: lots of um. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: What do you call it? Secret police who are around, who are monitoring um, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: you know, and that sounds a little creepy, but really that that does keep us safe. Um! But again, like I said, it is a very safe place. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um, I wouldn't be taking you there if I didn't think it was safe. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: So that is my Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: overview. Of the course i'm going to stop sharing my screen now and Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: open up to questions. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: So what questions do you have? What can I tell you? Lilly Reising: I was just curious about what the dates would be for the pre departure meetings that we need to attend. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Let me confirm that they are Fridays in April. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um. But let me tell you exactly what Fridays it's. April Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: fourteen, twenty, one and twenty-eight Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: actually seven, fourteen, and twenty one Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: it's three Fridays in April uh from about ten, thirty to twelve, thirty. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Thank you so much. Yeah. Sure. Allison. Alyson Staley: Yeah. Hi. So I was just wondering. Um. So Alyson Staley: do you know that if if we were to apply for one of the scholarships for studying abroad. Would that um Would we be able to use that for costs like the flight, or would it just go towards the program cost Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: great question. So there are different kinds of scholarships, and I think it. Each scholarship has its own um parameters. So the Hamilton Luger School has the the Patrick Omara scholarship, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: and that, I believe can put can be put to anything um, But that is a Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: I think it's a slightly smaller amount. I think it. I don't know what it is. I think it might be up to a thousand dollars. Um! But then the hut and Honors program, I believe, has scholarships for students with a certain Gpa. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um. Those I think you can use for anything any any part of the cost um the office of overseas studies, I believe, also has scholarships, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: and I I don't know actually what those can be used towards. Um. But I would encourage you if if finances are a challenge and they are, I I know that. And like I, said I, i'm doing everything I can to keep the costs down. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: There are opportunities out there. You just have to. You gotta look. You gotta ask people. I would. You know contact your Department contact the office of overseas studies. Um! Scour the Internet. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Ask people for money. Um, it is out there. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: i'm going to butcher your name, but sat back in. Did you have your hand raised before? Sachin Talagery: Uh yeah, hmm. I don't know why I went down. Uh yeah. My question was just uh whether the details they talked about You'd be like sending it anywhere, posting it summer or something. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Yes, um, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: that is a good question. I will see if I can get it up, So there is uh the Hamilton Lugar School has a website with Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: with information about the program. Um, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: I know what I can do. Hold on. I have a handout that I forgot about that I should be able to. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: We'll give you all the link to in the chat. Um, thank you. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Yes, thank you for reminding me. And now I have to figure out how to use one drive, because Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: I don't know how to use it. Yet i'm still figuring that out. Hold on! Let me find this link before I forget. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Thank you. I want to find Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: this Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: thing that i'm wrote up about the trip. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: I think this is it Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: so? Let me share it. I don't Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: um. I really apologize for not having done this in advance, and Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: and I will see if that didn't copy. Sorry Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: All right. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Someone try to open that and let me know if it works. Um. Meanwhile, uh tal ha! Do you have a question? And I think you said you go by something else. But I already, for I don't remember what it was. Talha Kahf: Yeah, Sorry I I go by. Taj: It's just nickname either. One's fine. Um! I I have a stupid cost cost question. So the one thousand two hundred for the airplane ticket, and then one thousand six hundred and fifty for everything else. I'm. Assuming that doesn't include the normal tuition cost for the in T L. Three hundred and three class. Right? Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Correct um, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: but my understanding, and someone else probably knows this better than me. But my understanding is, if you're registered for a full course, load Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: um that cost doesn't vary, and the one credit add on Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: shouldn't. Add again, if you're registered for a full course, load the one credit, add on shouldn't. Change anything. Arjun Athalye: Uh Yeah, hi, uh, I had a question. I'm in the International studies, Major. So uh, would this satisfy the study of broad requirement? Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: No. For um international studies uh travel abroad. You have to do, I believe, at least six week period. Arjun Athalye: I know It's not about this. But would you know if this uh study about requirement like, is it mandatory, or only just strongly required? Like strongly encouraged? Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: I believe it's mandatory. But that would be a question for the international studies advisors. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Sure. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Uh Nora Nora West: um! Do you know, if this would impact, Nora West: not graduation ceremony, but actual graduation, like what some senior, what it what I have to be enrolled in sort of the summer, and then graduate in August because the grades would be in after. No, that's a good question. Um. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: It probably interferes with graduation ceremony, whether that Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: that's up to you, if that bothers you or not. But um, even though Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: the one credit add on is um Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: after Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: the the dates itself are after the end of the spring semester and grades. Do we go in? A little bit later? It is still part of spring semester, so you would still be able to graduate in the spring. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um! Another Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: thing that I didn't mention is that um, the application deadline is, I believe, November first, and the application itself is fairly simple. It's a few, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: a huge, very short, like one paragraph essays um, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: and you're asked to give a name of a reference, but you don't need to get a letter of recommendation or anything, so it shouldn't take too long to fill out that being said, we only have twelve spots. Um, so I suspect there will be some level of competition. So Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: I would encourage you to Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: not just write the for not just submit. The first thing that comes to mind, but you know, spend a little bit of time reviewing your short answers before you submit it. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: also, like I said it is. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: I mean, there's sort of this fine balance right there. It's in everyone's interest to have more students apply because the more students who go the lower the cost is um. But if we get above the twelve, I mean, there's a twelve student, Max. So then more than twelve students. It becomes competitive. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: But tell your friends because you know Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: it's a good opportunity. Nora West: Yeah, the second one. Um. So Nora West: how? So? I don't speak Arabic. Do you think that is going Well, it's two part question. Do you think that would kind of limit the experience a little bit, especially in relation to the refugee organizations? And then, second, how much are you going to wait? Language speaking abilities on the application? Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Great question? Arabic is not required. Um for the program. All of the formal presentations we will attend will be in English. Um. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: The interactions that you will have, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: you know informally, with with different populations, and particularly with the refugee populations. Those will vary. Some of them will speak English, some of them will have some level of English. Um, some will have none, and then either Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: you know. Then then you do what you do when you're abroad, and you try to communicate in other ways. You grab a friend who's who can help translate. You just play soccer, or whatever sports we're working on. Um, I don't think Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: I don't think it will limit the opportunity. Um! And it is not something that I am looking at in particular in the application Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: that being said, If you do speak Arabic or you are a Middle Eastern studies, Major, this is a great opportunity, right, and there'll be lots of opportunities to practice your Arabic, but it is certainly not required, and I don't think it will impact the experience. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um, Ellie Elly Hnem: is the uh deadline, for the fees do the same time as application deadline. So um, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: the application is November First, I believe. Uh you will be notified within a few weeks, so that you can register, and, you know, finalize your spring semester uh class schedule Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: the Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: two hundred and twenty-five dollars. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Okay, actually, let me step back. So anyone who is accepted. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: we will actually enroll everyone all at once into the one credit component. And it is at that point that the two hundred and twenty-five dollar non refundable fee is due, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: and then payment for the course, um, I think, can be made in pieces, but needs to be made in full by spring. Break Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: any other questions, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: All right. Um. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Well, I just put my email in the chat if Oh, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: go ahead Sachin Talagery: and and tell me how to pronounce your name. Sachin Talagery: Hmm. Sachin Talagery: Would the course be kind of like in generally like Sachin Talagery: if it was like any other course in international studies. And then we're adding on possibly the travel component, Or is it more kind of like preparation towards the travel component oriented? Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: No. So. Um, three o three is like any other regular course, and it is a full class uh with Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: a full syllabus and assignments, as if you were not going abroad. And then Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: for up to twelve people there is the add on component of the ten days. Sachin Talagery: Okay. So there could be more people in the class than Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: okay, and that's like previously decided through the application process Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: will apply to for the one credit. Add on um, and of course, anyone if we do have more than twelve students. Apply for the one credit. Add on, and they aren't um Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: aren't able to join the one credit out on their welcome to just take three o three. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um: Okay, Sachin Talagery: Does that make sense? Yeah, Thank you. Sure. Thank you. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Any other questions. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: What time is the course during the spring semester. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um! I believe it is Tuesday, Thursday, one ten to two, twenty-five. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: But Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: I would recommend double checking that Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: with whatever is on the registrar. Any other questions. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: All right. Well, thank you all so much for coming. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Um, and I hope that I see some of your applications in the next few weeks. And, like I said, don't hesitate to reach out to me. If you have other questions that come up Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: um, or if your parents have questions that come up, or anything like that, Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: and have a good evening. Lilly Reising: Thank you. Dr. Elisheva (Elly) Cohen, she/her: Thank you. Bye,
