Lugar Legacy

Honoring the Lugar Legacy

Senator Richard G. Lugar was the gentle giant of American diplomacy. Quietly ambitious and determinedly decent, he paved a post-Cold War path away from nuclear confrontation and toward a safer and more just world.

Indiana University's Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies is founded in this spirit of nonpartisan, global engagement.

In times of global change and challenge, we need principled leaders who are committed to far-reaching, nonpartisan solutions. Leaders who celebrate difference and seek shared understanding. Leaders like Senator Lugar.

Develop a pipeline of talent

In 2018, IU's Hamilton Lugar School created the Global Leadership Scholars Program to honor Senator Lugar's historic and groundbreaking career and to build upon his legacy for future generations. The creation of this program coincided with the matriculation of the largest freshman class in the school's history—a spike in growth that has made HLS one of largest schools of its kind in the Midwest and the fastest growing in the country.

We hope you will honor Senator Lugar’s legacy by investing in the Global Leadership Scholars Program. A gift of any size will provide ongoing tuition support for our students and help the Hamilton Lugar School create a strong pipeline of leaders well prepared to advance the global good.
