I’ve gotten to participate in the Global Leaders and Professionals Program with our career specialist, and I spent two incredible summers as a trainee with the Department of State in our nation’s capital. After I graduate in May, I will move to Washington, D.C. to start my career in federal government service and begin part-time graduate school!
During my time at IU, I’ve taken opportunities to hone my academic focus as well as get involved in the larger HLS community. Before coming to college and for the first half of my freshman year, I was worried that I wouldn’t be able to make close friends. However, in my role as a Student Ambassador and through getting involved with organizations such as Sigma Iota Rho (the international studies honors society) and campus ministries, I’ve been able to get to know other students who have become some of my closest friends. Some of our favorite activities include eating at international restaurants on 4th Street, going hiking and taking day trips to Lake Monroe and Brown County, having movie nights, or attending football games or music performances.
Both my courses at HLS and our school events, like our annual America’s Role in the World conference (my personal favorite!), have been extremely fulfilling, challenging me to broaden my perspective in matters of foreign affairs. Additionally, I found my professors to be extremely engaging, friendly, and supportive helping me to navigate college and the world.
When I was looking at colleges as a high school student, one of the best pieces of advice that I received was: to the extent you are able, choose the school that will help shape you into the person you wish to become. For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated by the world around me, to include its people, cultures, and governing systems, and I desired to continue my higher education with likeminded colleagues.
Not only did I find an academically strong and professionally focused choice in Hamilton Lugar, but I found a supportive community that embraced me and my peers as one of the HLS family. I’ve gotten to learn from people of all backgrounds, which has been invaluable for my personal growth. Studying at this school has exceeded my expectations for my college experience. Looking back on my time here, this school has brought out the best in me and challenged me in my pursuits. It has made me a better, truer version of myself.
If you have any questions about life as a Hamilton Lugar student, please feel free to reach out to me - I’d love to connect with you! Best wishes for the rest of your senior year, and I hope to hear from you soon!
Sincerely,
Grace
