Honoring Secretary James A. Baker, III

Rep. Lee Hamilton and James Baker III on the cover of NewsweekThe Hamilton Lugar School will honor former US Secretary of State and Treasury James A. Baker III at its exclusive Annual Scholarship Event.

Rep. Lee H. Hamilton, who celebrates his 90th birthday in April, will introduce Secretary Baker. The veteran statesmen co-chaired the Iraq Study Group, the 2006 blue-ribbon commission panel that recommended options for US policy in Iraq. Secretary Baker, who was also White House Chief of Staff in the Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations, will be interviewed by New Yorker staff writer Susan Glasser and New York Times Chief White House correspondent Peter Baker, co-authors of the New York Times Best Seller, "The Man Who Ran Washington: The Life and Times of James A. Baker III."

In 1991, Baker received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. From 1997 to 2004, he served as the personal envoy of United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan to seek a political solution to the conflict over Western Sahara. In 2005, he and former President Jimmy Carter co-chaired the Federal Commission on Election Reform. The following year, Baker and former US Congressman Lee H. Hamilton co-chaired the Iraq Study Group, a bipartisan blue-ribbon panel examining a forward-looking approach to Iraq.

Baker’s memoir, "Work Hard, Study...and Keep Out of Politics!," was published in October 2006. Presently, he is a senior partner in the Houston-based law firm Baker Botts.
