Internships

Build experience around the world, or closer to home. Hamilton Lugar students intern in government, business, nonprofits, policy and international affairs.

Where to start

Some students take a placement we arrange, at home or overseas. Others find their own and bring it to us. Either way you can earn credit for it, apply for funding, and get help finding and writing the application before you send it.

  • A man talking to two students in suits.
    We match you

    Internship Placement Program

Tell us your interests, your language study and the regions you know, and we match you with the partners where that fits. Placements run in five cities and remotely.

  • A student talking to a woman at the Nonprofit Expo a career fair.
    Who hosts

    Internship Partners

City government agencies, think tanks in Europe, service providers in Africa, and policy shops in Washington. See who hosts our students and what each of them works on.

Also worth a look

  • Internships Abroad

Spend a summer working with an organization in Ghana, Malawi or Spain.

What we help with

  • Tell us about it

Found your own? Submit the internship declaration form so we know, and so we can help.

  • Turn it into credit

SGIS X373 turns any internship into one to three credits, however you found the placement.

  • Apply for funding

Internship Scholarships has the awards, what they cover and how to apply.

  • Writing the application

Policy and think-tank applications do not read like corporate ones. The Walter Center has the current guidance, including what a policy writing sample looks like.
