Hamilton Lugar School students have access to a number of school-funded scholarships designed to support everything from tuition to overseas studies.

Undergraduate scholarships
Study Abroad Scholarships
HLS has scholarships that are specifically for supporting undergraduate students who are participating in an overseas study experience. The overseas study program can be for a summer, a semester, or an academic year.
Eligibility
To be eligible for an HLS study abroad scholarships, you must:
- Be officially enrolled as a full-time undergraduate student (minimum 12 credit hours) with a major or minor in HLS at the time you apply
- Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.00 at the time you apply
- Have been accepted to participate in an IU-approved*, credit-bearing overseas study program**
- Preference is given to applicants who has not previously received an HLS study abroad scholarship
*Non-IU programs must be approved in advance by the Office of International Admissions via approval of the Credit Transfer Agreement Form.
**Feltman/Simcox scholarship gives priority to students studying in Russia.
Application process and materials
To be considered for an HLS study abroad scholarship, you must submit an application, including the following materials, by the application deadline:
- Acceptance confirmation to overseas study program
- Program budget
- Personal statement
- Resume
- One letter of recommendation from an IU (preferably HLS) faculty member

About the donor
This scholarship was established through the generosity of IU alumnus Harold Anderson. Harold studied history in the College of Arts and Sciences. He also joined Sigma Pi Fraternity and played on the IU basketball team in 1925–26. Harold taught history and coached basketball in the Madison County area, and later returned to IU and graduated from the IU Maurer School of Law. He was a distinguished lawyer for many years in Anderson, Indiana.
About the donor
This scholarship was established by alumnus Nathan Feltman who earned both a B.S. in Business from the Kelley School of Business and a B.A. in Political Science from the College of Arts & Sciences in 1992; a J.D. from the Robert H. McKinney School of Law in 1994; and a L.L.M. in Russian Law from the Institute of State & Law, Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia. Nathan Feltman studied Russian language and culture as part of his undergraduate degree in political science and completed several study abroad programs in the former Soviet Union. He has worked as a corporate lawyer at international law firms in Moscow, Chicago and Indianapolis; served as Secretary of Commerce for the State of Indiana and CEO of the Indiana Economic Development Corporation, as owner and CEO of the healthcare company Home Health Depot; and is an owner of IBJ Media. Mr. Feltman is a member of several notable boards, among which the Dean’s Advisory Council of the Hamilton Lugar School.
About the donor
This scholarship was established through the generosity of IU alumnus James D. Fielding and his family. Jim studied political science in the College of Arts and Sciences. His study abroad experience in Copenhagen, Denmark, profoundly influenced him. He notes that the experience has had a significant impact on his ability to work for global companies and to successfully engage in a great deal of international business.
Jim’s career has largely been focused on retail, and has included positions as president of Disney Stores Worldwide and CEO of Claire’s Stores. He is currently President of Consumer Products and Innovation for Fox Television Group and Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation.
About the donor
Patrick O'Meara is a well-known scholar of international development, comparative politics, and African politics. After completing his doctorate in political science at Indiana University, he went on to serve as director of the African Studies Program, Dean for International Programs, IU's first Vice President for International Affairs, and as Special Advisor to the Indiana University President. His faculty appointments were in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, and Political Science. He has been closely affiliated with the Hamilton Lugar School since its inception.
The endowment for the fellowships was made possible through the generosity of Indiana University Distinguished Research Scholar and Professor Emeritus of Mathematics, Madan L. Puri, in honor of Patrick O'Meara.
Intern scholarships
Established to assist HLS students with a record of academic excellence to pursue impactful internship experiences in the U.S. and abroad in summer.

March 17, 2019
Eligibility
- Undergraduate or graduate student with a major in HLS
- Minimum GPA: 3.2
- Proof of acceptance to a summer internship program

After completion of your internship, submit the following:
- Self-Evaluation: submit Site Evaluation including Journal and Reflection after completion of internship
- Internship Employer Evaluation Form
Selection criteria
- Promise of a productive learning experience as indicated by intellectual capacity reflected in grades and faculty recommendation
- Significance in alignment of educational and career goals
- Feasibility and clarity of proposed budget

Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowships
The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships are funded by the United States Department of Education in support of graduate and undergraduate students studying less commonly taught languages and cultures, in particular, those considered to be of critical interest to the United States. They are intended to promote the training of students who plan to make their careers in college or university teaching, government service, or other employment where knowledge of foreign languages and cultures is a prerequisite for success.
HLS Graduate Fellowships
The Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) fellowships are funded by the United States Department of Education in support of graduate and undergraduate students studying less commonly taught languages and cultures, in particular, those considered to be of critical interest to the United States. They are intended to promote the training of students who plan to make their careers in college or university teaching, government service, or other employment where knowledge of foreign languages and cultures is a prerequisite for success.
Established by P.A. Mack to honor his late wife, Marian vonLackum Mack, who lived her life with a keen interest in the study of foreign relations, which led her to consider a career in foreign serve with the U.S. State department. P.A. Mack was the chief of staff for U.S. Senator Birch Bayh and was appointed by both Presidents Carter and Regan to serve as a member of National Credit Union Administration of which he was elected Vice-Chairman. Marian vonLackum Mack graduated from the University of Iowa and complete several graduate courses at the School of International Studies at John Hopkins University.

Eligibility
All graduate students pursuing degrees in the Hamilton Lugar School are eligible for this award. It may be renewed for a up to five years of study. The graduate admissions committee will automatically consider all incoming applicants and award the Marian vonLackum Mack Doctoral Student Fellowship based on merit. No additional application is necessary.
