Middle Eastern Languages & Cultures

Become an expert on Middle Eastern languages and cultures

IU and the Hamilton Lugar School have long offered outstanding undergraduate education in Middle Eastern Studies. This year, we are developing a BA in Regional and Comparative Studies*, an innovative degree that will enable students to select one of our established majors focused on Central Eurasia, the Middle East, or East Asia. Students will be able to choose from all the excellent courses associated with those majors, as well as some exciting new cross-regional and comparative courses. We also anticipate adding other regionally focused majors in the future. The BA in Regional and Comparative Studies will empower students to pursue a deep understanding of Middle Eastern languages, histories, politics, and cultures while being part of a strong cohort of students with interests in key areas around the world.

Students interested in Middle Eastern Studies should indicate the BA in Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures as their primary major on the Fall 2026 application. Applicants for Spring 2027 and beyond will be able to select the BA in Regional and Comparative Studies*. For any questions, please contact Carissa Garletts, our Director of Admissions, at hlsadmit@iu.edu.
