The former Deputy Permanent Representative of Iraq to the United Nations (2004-2007), Istrabadi is a widely-cited expert on matters of the Middle East, international law and diplomacy. Ambassador Istrabadi focuses his research on the processes of building legal and political institutions in countries in transition from dictatorship to democracy. Amb. Istrabadi was principal legal drafter of the Iraqi interim constitution of 2004. Based on his experiences in post-2003 Iraq, he focuses his research on constitutional issues, problems in engendering rule-of-law institutions, and post-conflict justice issues in the Middle East. Ambassador Istrabadi lectures often at universities and policy institutes, and he appears frequently in national and international media.
