Understanding Study Abroad Costs
The Hamilton Lugar School offers different types of study abroad programs, each with their own cost structure.
As an exchange student studying abroad, Hamilton Lugar School students will pay their regular tuition to IU. They are eligible to receive their financial aid and scholarships.
In addition to tuition, exchange student can expect to pay for the following:
- International Health insurance (approx. $40 p/month)
- Education Abroad Service Fee (approx. $250)
- International airfare and travel to/from the airport
- Visa/immigration fees
- Housing costs
- Personal expenses (food, books and incidentals)
Program fees
Each short-term program has its own fee, which covers a variety of your experiences abroad such as housing, international health insurance, course excursions, select meals (varies by program), and transportation (varies by program).
Students are also expected to pay a $225 international programs fee.
These fees will be charged to your IUB Bursar account in two installments:
- An initial deposit to confirm your participation
- The remaining program fee
Bloomington Tuition
You will register and pay for the course credits at the IU Bloomington tuition rate (based on your student status). If you are enrolled as a full time IUB undergraduate student during the spring semester and enroll in a short-term study abroad program as part of your block credits, there is no additional program cost.
Other fees
Participants in Hamilton Lugar School short-term study abroad programs are responsible for purchasing their own flights and visas. You will be given clear instructions on arrival and departure times. Students will be expected to pay for their own flight and visas, as well as other expenses not covered by the program.
Additional costs
You will need to pay for any food that is not included in the program fee, any transportation that is not included in the program fee, vaccinations, visa fees, your international cell phone plan (optional), free-time activities, and other incidentals.
Students participating in an Hamilton Lugar School internship abroad are expected to pay the following:
- Program fee, which you will pay directly to the internship provider
- International health insurance, charged directly to your Bursar account
- International program fee of $225, charged directly to your Bursar account
- Round trip flight and visa if necessary
- Other costs not included in the program fee, such as visa fees, vaccinations, international cell phone plan, etc.
Study Abroad Scholarships
The Hamilton Lugar School has scholarships to support undergraduate students participating in a study abroad program. The study abroad program can be for a summer, a semester, or an academic year.
