Who are HLS Students?

Hamilton Lugar School students bring a unique combination of global perspective and practical skills to every internship. Our students specialize in international affairs, policy analysis, global cybersecurity, languages, and area studies. With 70% studying abroad and access to 80+ languages (more than any other U.S. university), HLS students offer:

About the Internship Placement Program

The HLS Internship Placement Program provides students with hands-on professional training while delivering valuable contributions to partner organizations across local, national, and international sectors. Through carefully matched placements, students gain real-world experience and organizations benefit from fresh perspectives and dedicated support

  • Facilitate an internal application process to screen applicants
  • Recommend top candidates for the internship
  • Provide a pre-internship orientation to all interns
  • Provide ongoing support to supervisors, as needed

  • Provide expectations for the intern and any needed training
  • Assign the intern meaningful tasks and responsibilities to match their knowledge, skills, and interests
  • Provide regular supervision, guidance, and feedback to the intern
  • Work with the intern to set a regular schedule for their internship work
  • Communicate with the HLS Internship Placement Program team if problems arise
  • Complete a post-internship evaluation and submit to the HLS Internship Placement Program team

Length of Internship:

  • Fall or Spring Semester: 10 weeks
  • Summer: Minimum of 8 weeks, maximum 12 weeks

Weekly Time Commitment (to be specified upon application)

  • Fall or Spring: 4-12 hours p/week
  • Summer: 20-40 hours per week
