Professor Asma Afsaruddin delivers plenary address on Islamic feminism at global conference
Hamilton Lugar School's Asma Afsaruddin, Class of 1950 Herman B Wells Endowed Professor of Middle Eastern Languages and Cultures, was recently featured in the news for delivering a plenary address titled “Rereading the Qur’an through a Muslim Feminist Lens” at an international conference hosted by the Sarojini Naidu Centre for Women’s Studies at Jamia Millia Islamia in New Delhi.
The two-day conference, Islamic Feminism and Decolonial Futures: Epistemology, Ethics, and Praxis (November 7–8), brought together leading scholars to explore gender justice, Qur’anic hermeneutics, and feminist scholarship across global contexts. Afsaruddin’s address examined interpretive approaches to the Qur’an that affirm women’s agency and equality, contributing to ongoing conversations about Islamic feminism and decolonial thought.
Her participation underscores Hamilton Lugar School’s commitment to advancing inclusive scholarship and fostering dialogue on critical global issues.
