A Life of Service and Global Leadership
Representative Lee H. Hamilton dedicated his life to understanding the world and strengthening America’s role within it. Over 34 years in the U.S. House of Congress, his leadership shaped national policy on foreign affairs, national security, and democratic governance. He was widely regarded as a voice of reason, integrity, and bipartisan cooperation.
A Legacy That Built a School
Together, Sen. Lugar and Rep. Hamilton were the founding spirit of the Hamilton Lugar School of Global and International Studies at Indiana University. Their shared vision — to prepare students to engage the world with knowledge, humility, and purpose — continues to define the heart of our mission.
Guiding Generations
Hamilton never stopped teaching. He met with students, visited classes, and encouraged young people to ask hard questions and seek common ground. His values are woven into the culture of the school that bears his name.
Remembering and Honoring His Life
We invite the Hamilton Lugar community to reflect on his legacy and celebrate the ideals he championed throughout his life. Information about memorial events and opportunities to share remembrances will be posted here as they become available.
